TL;DR
The thinking player's mage: Iceman and Frost chill everything, Terror extends spell damage into control, and the knockback plus Blink keep the field shaped how you want it. Chain Hit → Mass Destruction lets crits do the cleaning while enemies crawl toward you. Less burst than fire, far more safety when everything moves at half speed.

- Critical chance — Wizard feeds Chain Hit, which feeds Mass Destruction
- Spirit secondary for the mana pool
Recommended weapons
Grounded in verified 1.0 changes (armor set conversions, gem buffs) rather than datamined damage tables — our weapons database is still being verified.
| Slot | Early | Mid | Endgame |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weapon 1 | Any tier-1 staff; frost-damage wand as filler | Revelwood-tier staff with frost/cold damage perks | Eternal frost spells (every spell has an eternal version in 1.0) upgraded at the class crafting survivor |
Eternal spells and their upgrade path are confirmed in the official 1.0 changelog.
Recommended armor
- Intelligence-scaled arcane sets from the mage crafting line
- Mana regeneration and magic-damage perks; Ice Resistance (on-tree) covers the elemental hole
Food & consumables
- Mana-regeneration meals from farm produce — non-negotiable for this build
- Fill all food slots before long Shroud dives; control fights are marathons
Gear progression
Early (levels 1–15)
Spirit entry → Mage Apprentice → Iceman ranks. Frost damage works before the control combo exists.
Mid (levels 15–30)
Frost 3, Wizard 3, Mana Currents 3 — the control engine. Add Ice Resistance ranks when pushing cold regions.
BiS (levels 30–50)
Chain Hit → Mass Destruction, Terror 3, Begone!, Blink, eternal frost spells upgraded at the crafting survivor.
Playstyle
Shape the field before damage happens: layer frost on approaching packs, use the 1.0 ground cursor on area spells to place slows exactly where the pack will be, and let crits (Wizard → Chain Hit → Mass Destruction) do the cleanup. Begone! anything that reaches melee range back into the slow, Blink out of anything that doesn't respect that, and keep Mana Currents-fed regeneration rolling so the control never stops. In co-op you're the pace-setter — a frozen pack in a doorway is a free win for your damage dealers.
Strengths & weaknesses
Strengths
- Crowd control converts hard content into easy content — everything arrives late
- Mass Destruction + frozen packs is a self-feeding clear loop
- Blink plus Begone! means almost no situation is truly inescapable
Weaknesses
- Slower kill speed than the fire crit pipeline
- Frost-resistant enemies blunt the whole plan — keep a second element in mind (Thunder is one branch over)
- Mana-hungry; without regeneration the control rotation sputters
Synergies & counters
- Any damage dealer benefits from enemies arriving slowed and bunched
- Thunder (one branch over) is the natural second element when content resists frost
What counters this build
Frost-immune or heavily-resistant enemies remove the control layer and leave you a worse fire mage — that's the known cost of committing to one element. Fast lone targets (bosses) don't care about slows as much; that's what Terror and the crit combo are for.
Level-by-level skill order
Suggested unlock order for the 61-point target — follow it roughly; the exact pace depends on how many Shroud Roots and Elixir Wells you've found (they fund the same pool of points).

- You want the biggest burst numbers — play fire battlemage
- You hate mana management
- Your group already fields a control-heavy mage
FAQ
Is a frost mage viable in Enshrouded 1.0?
Yes — the Iceman and Frost lines are intact on the 1.0 tree, 1.0 added ground-cursor aiming for area spells (better slow placement), and eternal frost spells exist per the official changelog. It trades the fire build's burst for control and safety.
What's the best mage build for hard content?
For hardest content, control beats raw damage: frozen packs can't overwhelm you, and Mass Destruction still clears them once crits come online. Fire battlemage clears faster; frost mage dies less — pick by how much you trust your positioning.
Does slow stack with other crowd control?
Enemy slow and stagger are separate systems on the tree — Frost slows movement while Terror and Begone! handle the panic-button cases. Exact stacking rules aren't published in the server files, so we flag rather than guess; in practice layering them keeps packs re-controlled almost permanently.
